Be Human

Too often, businesses feel it necessary to be overly formal on Twitter. However, this is a practice that will only see your Twitter engagement go down because, if it’s not obvious enough, Twitter users prefer interacting with people as opposed to brands.

But you are still a brand so how do you become human? First of all, your tweets should reflect your personality as a brand. People respond best to friendly, and conversational tweets.

Try your best to give your brand a human side and show your audience that side with interesting, informational, humorous and relevant content that will keep your audience hooked. Use Twitter to convey insights and information about your company that your customers can’t find elsewhere.

Find the Best Tweeting Time

Even though the internet has made it possible for people to be online 24 hours, 7 days, 365 days, this doesn’t mean that any time is a good time to tweet, there are specific best times that followers on twitter are most active.

If you want to gain high Twitter engagement for your business, it is vital that you find out when these times are for your audience, and take advantage of them by tweeting more during such times.

When picking the time to send out your tweets keep in mind the target audience and adjust accordingly. If you are reaching out to worldwide audience, keep time zones in mind too. Sometimes it may be difficult to send out tweets in the middle of the night or very early in the morning if these are the times your audience is online, you can however use social media tools such as buffer or Hootsuite and schedule tour tweets ahead of time when you are available.

Also, don’t forget to tweet during the weekends. Research shows that engagement on Twitter for brands is 17% higher on weekends than during weekdays. Take advantage of this opportunity and tweet on Saturday and Sunday too.

The Shorter the Tweets the Better

Twitter has a character limit of 140 and the shorter the tweet, the higher the probability that the audience will pay attention to it. People like clear, funny, informative and short tweets that are easy to understand.

According to research, tweets with at most 100 characters get 17% more engagement. You also want a tweet that people will easily retweet without having to worry that it will be more that 140 characters.

Don’t Forget Hashtags

Hashtags on Twitter are a sure way of increasing engagement on the platform. Hashtags make it your tweets visible and easier to find therefore increase your content reach. Hashtags also make it easy to find relevant discussions and trends and also to search for information on Twitter.

This however, does not mean that you should overuse them. Two to three hashtags per tweet is a healthy Twitter practice.

Drive Twitter Engagement with Shortened Links

A better way to increase Twitter engagement other than likes, mentions and retweets is clicks on your links. The more clicks you have, the higher your engagement on Twitter. Shortened links drive engagement more than normal links.

Links make it easier for people to interact with your tweets and are a good way to call people to action. To shorten your links you can use link shortening tools such as bit.ly.

The ultimate Twitter marketing goal is for people to share your content to increase its reach. You therefore have to tweet content that is shareable. People tend to share positive Tweets that solve a problem, answer a question, entertain or inspire.

People will remember what they see more than what they read. For this reason, using images will increase engagement on twitter. It might be quicker and easier to tweet rather than upload images but if as a business, your aim is to increase engagement, it’s best to include images in your tweets.

Watching content has become as popular as images. People want to see more than they read so add a video to your tweets. To share a video, simply add the URL to your YouTube, Vimeo etc. to your tweet and your video will play directly in an expanded tweet.

Good quotes are very popular because they inspire, inform and entertain. The best quotes are those that are helpful or inspirational to your followers.

Questions, Polls and Contests

Questions are another fun way of inviting Twitter engagement. You can ask questions and provide answers using a link. Twitter polls and contests are also a good way of increasing your Twitter engagement because they make your followers feel useful and a part of your brand.

Post the Same Content Multiple Times

You might be mistaken to think that you should not send the same content more than once on Twitter. However, it’s ok to tweet the same content several times. For instance, if you are trying to promote your website, sharing tweets about a particular blog post every week is quite ok. This will increase the chances of your followers finding your content on Twitter because not everyone will see it the first time you tweet it. All you have to do is ensure that you space out the posts to avoid being regarded as spam.

Use a Call to Action

A call to action is asking people to do something or act in a certain way that may be both beneficial to the follower and your business. The main goal is to turn a follower into a customer.

Call to actions create a platform for the business to entice their followers on twitter and convince them to take a certain action that will increase Twitter engagement such as click a link, download content, reply, retweet a post, follow you and so on. Including a deadline may increase the urgency and call followers to action quicker.

Respond to Users

As a business looking to increase engagement on twitter, responding to your users is a must. Answering questions, clarifying information and thanking users for their retweets, likes and mentions are all ways that the business can use response to increase engagement on twitter.

Know who your users are and speak their language. This will also require you to constantly check your twitter traffic. Reply when people tweet about you, favorite and retweet positive messages, and thank those who are praising you. Promptly address tweets criticizing your business and offer assistance where possible.

Using the above strategies will increase your engagement on Twitter and push you towards the right direction in your Twitter marketing strategy.
